Neural Adaptations

Can you teach an Old Dog a New trick? What if I told you that the brain, both yours and mine, is in a constantly changing and transforming state.

 

Old unused neural pathways are pruned. Neuroplasticity is the capacity of the nervous system to develop new neural connections . New neural connections and pathways are being re wired . What we don’t use we will lose – funny how that also applies to the muscles in the body.

One of the benefits of resistance training (just limiting today’s discussion to resistance training)  is the adaptations that take place in the nervous system .We can train our bodies to get stronger , faster , develop resistance to fatigue  , and to be more powerful . The nervous system and that grey matter between your ears -plays a huge role in adaptations to resistance  training.

Brain ( motor cortex) sends the impulse down  through the spinal column and it innervates a motor unit . The motor unit in turn will TURN on a muscle fibre. This is a very basic diagram. But what’s important to understand is the SIZE PRINCIPLE .The more force that is required the more motor units are required.The less force and less motor units are recruited.

One of the first things that we will notice within the first 4 weeks of a new training program is that there will be an increase in strength without an increase in muscle hypertrophy. In a nutshell (just to protect my own butt) for BEGINNERS/NOVICES  the strength  gains will be neural and not from sarcoplasmic hypertrophy (increase of skeletal muscle  fibre size). The neural gains will be from increased motor unit synchronization and motor unit recruitment (increased efficiency from the nervous system).

Instead of looking at our time in the gym as simply “lifting weights”-maybe we should be looking at it as Training for the Nervous System.
